More Signs of Spring: Sandhill Cranes

By ranchette

I heard them passing overhead the other evening during chores: the sound is unmistakeable once you’ve heard it. The Sandhill Cranes, tall slate blue cranes with red heads, were passing through. Two things amaze me about there: 1) How high they fly; (cranes regularly fly at between 3000 to 5000 feet but can fly significantly higher to make altitude over mountains. See the crane factsheet at the International Crane Foundation). 2) How clearly their voice carries even from far above.

I’ve not captured them on film yet myself, so for those of you who like a crane song as much as I do, I included this clip from YouTube.

We don’t get Cranes over here. We have plenty of geese though and those honkers are pretty noticable when flying overhead. I love sounds of birds. If you haven’t seen “Winged Migration”, watch it. It’s an awesome film.

I love the sound of birds too. It is so noticeable when they return. I do a lot of bird photography in one of my sidelines so I’ll definitely check out the Winged Migration film. Thanks for the tip Sue!
